Appropriately, we took the tree down today. I wish I could say we planned that on purpose, but it just worked out that way.

We have a tradition in our family: When we take down the tree, we inevitably discover that we "forgot" some of the presents, which got hidden under the skirt. Somehow, this happens, no matter how thoroughly we check on Christmas Day. This year, I received a can-opener (a really nifty one that cuts up under the seal, so you don’t get jagged edges) to replace the one Hippie stole. So that means it’s all yours, Kayla!

Visits, Grad School, and Resolutions

The last week has been busy, but not too bad, overall. Monday after Christmas, I went up to Indy. Met up with Sharon at Kayla's apartment, caught up for a while, then we went in Sharon's car up to Jenny and E's house. A bunch of people were over there RPGing, but I spent my time napping and reading E's latest novel-in-progress. It was really good!

The next day we all met in Indy for our annual Christmas lunch. It was good to see everyone. I suspect that from here on out, this will be the only time during the year that we will all get to see each other at once, what with everyone spread out now. Julie brought her husband-to-be, Andy. 'Bout time we met him! They're getting married and everything, but none of us had ever done more than see pictures of him on her website!

That evening I met up with Kayla again, we hung out at Circle Center, took advantage of Doubleday bookstore's going-out-of-business sale, then crashed at the apartment. We played "Are You A Werewolf," which would have been fun, if the boys didn't take it so seriously, and thus stretch it out forever. Got the joy of listening to Larry all night long :-P

In the morning I had brunch with Dustin and Stephen, who were on their way to see Dustin's parents. I hope that went well for them!

I've been spending most of my time since then stressing out over Grad school applications. I screwed up on the IU recommendations. There was a form to fill out, although I thought there wasn't. Turns out they do their apps through an outside online company, and you have to have an account with them before they give you info like that. But everything should be fixed now, and everything is almost done! I've finished my application to UNC Chapel Hill, and I just need to pay the fee to IU.

Things seem to have settled down now, though. I found out yesterday that UNC has received my GRE scores, but I haven't gotten them myself, yet. And I really want to find out how I did on the analytical writing.
Also, it's resolution time! I'm mostly sticking to stuff I know I can do, like graduating, and getting into grad school. There is, of course, the obligatory weight loss resolution, which strangely enough, I didn't bother making last year. And then there is the more personal resolution, which I don't really want to talk about online, but which will be the real hard resolution to deal with. We'll see.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, everyone! I'm hoping things will calm down, now that the holiday is over, but probably not. Wednesday I out up the tree. Thursday I cleaned the house and freaked out over my grad school applications. Friday I went back to Hanover to get my grad school recommendations lined up, because I completely missed the form I had to sign, promising that I hadn't seen the recommendations for Chapel Hill.

Sang with the choir at church for Christmas Eve. It wasn't a bad performance, especially seeing as how I only went to three rehearsals. It's a tradition at our church to commemorate all the new babies in the congregation at the Christmas Eve Vespers, and this year it was a little girl named Rebecca. It's truly a beautiful service. The reading addressed how, every night a child is born is a Holy Night. None of them are heralded by angels, but they are all born to potential, and they are all to be honored for the role they will play in changing the world for the better.

Then the chalice exploded. UUs have as their symbol a chalice with a flame in it. Somebody got the bright idea to put the flame this year in a glass vase - it'll be pretty, and fit in with the snow-themed altar. But did they think to make it a Pyrex vase? No... Eventually the glass just heated to the point where it exploded. In the middle of the baby dedication, there was this loud crack! and part of the vase just fell away. Luckily the oil was held in a metal container, otherwise that would have exploded too, and we'd have a repeat of 1985 (the last time the church burned down.)

The thing is, I seem to recall this happening before. We didn't go to vespers last year, because of the weather. But two or three years ago, we used a glass vase for the chalice, and it exploded then, too. You'd think someone would notice and take heed. Well, I suppose everyone needs a tradition...

Christmas Present Update: I now have the Librarian Action Figure Deluxe. Here that, Julie? Deluxe. Not just automatic shushing action, but also a reference desk, a computer displaying the cataloguing module, and a book cart. And not one of those crappy three level book carts with a divider that are prone to tipping, but a good steady two level book cart. With wheels. And laden with books. Now I just need my own office...

Feeding the Capitalist Machine

Today I went shopping with the Parental Unit Patros v1.0. We took my car up to Jerry's to get the check-up it should have had right after I bought it. Don't expect anything to go bad, it's just routine. But I will be without transportation until tomorrow or Wednesday. Possibly Thursday. Also got more minutes put on my time card. So I can call people, now!

Dad put up the tree, and is now putting lights on. If they want me to decorate it later, I'm going to insist on taking over the whole living room and watching "The Muppets' Christmas Carol" and "Mulan," and possibly the soundtrack of "Rent" over and over again.

Picked up some crocheting again. I miss this stuff. It's got the same boring repetitiveness of playing solitaire, only not on a screen. I can easily see this developing into something next semester.

Aerine: "Oh, I see you're doing Latin."
Ellie: *over yarn and hook* "Yeah."

Monday

Dad and I went to the Red Cross today to bleed into the bag. We always try to schedule an appointment sometime around December, just because it feels like a good way to give back during the holidays.

Came home and made a fruit cake. Dad insists on one every year, and insists that it's "just a fruit cake." You think it's so easy? Then you make it! Actually, it really is easy, it's just time consuming. About two and a half hours just to do the prep work. Tedious.

Mom's cleaning the living room so we can put up the tree, moving books around. Several shelves fell down on top of her tonight. Done with the GRE. Didn't do nearly so well as I could have, but my people tell me they still love me anyways. Am currently taking steps to reduce stress load next semester, more on that later.

Now I'm at home, and have nothing to do and no one to talk to. It's sad. I've only been gone a weekend, and I already miss everyone! So I've started talking to myself, and being honest about shit, and you know that's never a good thing. Someone leave me a message! Or IM me. I like IMs.

Meanwhile, A few days ago Celiedh mentioned Dar Williams' "Iowa," as one of those pining love ballads that don't make her laugh. So I've been listening to it a lot. For lack of better content, here are the lyrics:

Iowa, by Dar Williams

I’ve never had a way with women, but the hills of iowa make me wish that I could,
And I’ve never found a way to say I love you, but if the chance came by, oh i, I would,
But way back where I come from, we never mean to bother,
We don’t like to make our passions other peoples concern,
And we walk in the world of safe people, and at night we walk into our houses and burn.

Iowa oh ooo oh, iowa oh ooooh ooo oh i-iowa

How I long to fall just a little bit, to dance out of the lines and stray from the light,
But I fear that to fall in love with you is to fall from a great and gruesome height.
So I asked a friend about it, on a bad day, her husband had just left her,
She sat down on the chair he left behind, she said,
What is love, where did it get me? whoever thought of love is no friend of mine.

Ioway oh ooo oh, iowa oh ooooh ooo oh i-iowa

Once I had everything, I gave it up for the shoulder of your driveway and the words I’ve never felt.
And so for you, I came this far across the tracks, ten miles above the limit, and with no seatbelt, and I’d do it again,
For tonight I went running through the screen doors of discretion,
For I woke up from a nightmare that I could not stand to see,
You were a-wandering out on the hills of iowa and you were not thinking of me.

Ioway oh ooo oh, iowa oh ooooh ooo oh i-iowa
Ioway oh ooo oh, iowa oh ooooh ooo oh i-iowa

To-Do List for Thanksgiving Break

* Finish proofing new story about Clytemnestra.
* Write author's commentary on Clytemnestra
* Write author's commentary on Daphne
* Re-write dialogue in Apollo and Hyacinthus story
* Write author's commentary on Io and Prometheus
* Read Kate's story.

Other things that can stand to be done, but probably won't be this weekend:
* Review author's commentary on Io story
* Review author's commentary on Apollo and Hyacinthus story
* Create new outline for final IS essay
* Add bits about Aristotle into IS
* Clarify the theory.

From euphoric giddieness to self doubt.

Saw that in an away message tonight. Describes a lot, doesn't it? Pretty much sums up how I have felt nearly every night of the week for the last month.

I haven't posted in a long time, but that is because I am busy, and my stress levels are astronomic. I'm being a very good president to Love Out Loud, but I don't feel like I'm being good anywhere else in my life. I haven't focused on classes. I feel like I am being inattentive to other people because I simply don't have the time to talk. My stress is causing me to be unsympathetic to other people's problems, and I don't like that quality about myself. I haven't even been reading other people's LJs. I haven't had time to follow up on either the boy or the girl, and as a result, I may have lost my chance with both. I am either confused by mixed signals and sudden apathy, don't know how to interrupt a busy life that has little intersection with mine, or just too tired to make the effort after a long day.

My Ex started IMing my again, but I don't want to go into that in detail. I'm mad at him, but we still talk. Actually, sometimes he's the only person I talk to, as no one is around in the evening anymore, except him. I don't know how I feel about my Ex being the only person I can talk to about stuff. If he was this receptive before, I might never have broken up with him. But if he were this receptive before, he would not have been ignoring me for 2 months, so the point is kinda moot.

All I really want to do right now is spend all my time talking with a lover of the non-temporary sort, writing the IS which I absolutely adore, even if I spend a lot of time ignoring it, and thinking about what I'm going to do with my future. I haven't even had time to look for colleges or study for the GRE, even though I know from my summer research that I'm going to have to turn in my paperwork by early January in order to get a librarianship.

That's not everything, not by a long shot. To put it more concisely, I'm having a hard time reconciling what I see to be my responsibility with what is going to make me happy. I think I have resolved, no matter what happens in the future, to never again take up a leadership position in an activist group once I graduate from Hanover.

In which the author apologizes for her latest foray into the world of the blogger-emo

Yes. What do you do with that? I had a meaningful ending all worked out, then I went and changed my main focus of the rest of it, and... it all fell apart. I hate stories that are wonderful is every way, shape, and form, and then fall apart on the last page. Don't know what I'm going to do about that. I've spent the last 2 hours talking to Lana and watching Foamy, and really, I got nuthin'.

BTW, Lana gave me C's phone number. What's really amazing is how little time I actually spend thinking about this situation, except when it's brought up.

Writing

So, a very important part of the writing and re-writing process is playing solitaire. Gabriel Alexander Moore is 8lbs, 20 inches, and red as a little potato! As soon as he is old enough, I will introduce him to the joy of Batman. (Erin says no, he will have a bedroom decorated in Spiderman and the Hulk. But it's not about decoration, it's about introducing him to quality entertainment and the mythology of our time.)

I'm so proud of Erin and her baby. She went into labor late Thursday night, as I talked to her on the phone. You go girl!

In other news, I got the problems with my FAFSA worked out - the Financial Aid Office hadn't reported our change in financial situation, because it's policy to wait and make sure parents don't get a job. However, it's all good, and I have a Pell Grant for this year. So my classes will not be canceled. w00t!

Love Out Loud had it's first booth at Fall Preview Day! Rejoice! Watched Sharon buy very expensive Ren clothing that makes her look like a frothy fairy. Broke my glasses. I really wanted to write a good old fashioned straight romance, but I couldn't get into it. There aren't any romances in Greek mythology, but I seemed to think I could make this into one, when really it's just an extremely clever story. It's all intellectual trick/get tricked plotting. Vertumnus turned out to be the main character, not Pomona, but while he has motive, he frequently seems to just be going through the actions without any depth. In re-writing it, I need to make sure it's clear how he's supposed to be developing/adapting, such as the vine at the end of the story.

Finally, the court has been overruled in the "You can't teach your child Wicca" case. Kayla and Hippie almost died picking me up from work. We had a helluva storm last night, and the car started floating at the dip where Sherman crosses 10th. Once the water started coming into the car, Hippie kicked the backseat window out, and they climbed on top of the car. The undercurrents took one of Kayla's shoes, but luckily not her. When the fire fighters came for them, the water was chest high.

Meanwhile, I had taken the bus, because I thought they weren't coming...

I almost got hit by a car crossing the street (Didn't see it, rain had made my glasses useless), but nothing as dangerous as Kayla's little trip.

When we all got home, we made a frozen pizza and finished off a whole bottle of cheap wine between the three of us. Any blogger-devotees out there want to help? I don't get email notification when a responce is posted, although I always do with livejournal. It lists Dustin's blog in my profile, but it doesn't list any of my other links. Why is this? So confused...

Emailed Dr. Nick last week, told him a bit about my summer. Now he wants to see the short stories I told him were "more or less done." Damn, why didn't I think that he would do that if I brought it up? So now I'm spending today working on my rough drafts, so I can email them when I go home for Susanne's memorial service this weekend.

Today I'm going to bitch about my church chatlist, where a certain Mr G is acting like a complete asshole. He's faux erudite and verbose and pompous, then doesn't understand why we never know what he's saying. Does he do it because he thinks it makes him look smart? Or does he do it because then he can say such horrible things and get away with it because he "didn't mean it like that!"
Agatha and I have agreed to start a Young Adult Group for the Church. Or at least, I've volunteered, presuming I ever get a car. The very idea of car shopping just gives me a headache.
For reasons I don't understand. The UUA has defined Young Adult as anyone between 18-35. I find that odd. People who are 35 are married, have children, are on career tracks, have changed career tracks. THe only thing I've changed is my major. I really love some of my 35 year-old friends at church, but I really don't feel we're in the same peer group.
Nonetheless, we are starting a Young Adult Group, and if this goes well, it may be the only thing holding me at First U. I've seriously been thinking, "What would happen if I just never went back?" Answer: I wouldn't get to see Agatha or Marty, but then, I don't get to see them much anyway.
And that's the end of me bitching about church.

I find that the further I go back, the better things were, whether theyhappened or not.
- Mark Twain. I went canoing with Donnie's family on Sunday. Got sunburned. It was 15miles, and by the end of it I was ready to be done. Donnie and Kayla werebehind us, and Hippie and I were worried after they didn't show up, so werowed upstream after them. Turns out Donnie and Kayla's boat capsized, andDonnie lost his wallet. It had his SS card, his access card for work, andhis time card. And $400. Kayla and I didn't bitch at him for carrying thatmuch in his wallet, or carrying his wallet into a creek, because he seemedto be doing a pretty good job of beating himself up about it. He had 5 hours on the creek to think about it. At least we had already gotten allour bills for the month paid.

I had to work on Independence Day, but I got off after 7. Missed my bushome, and the next wasn't until 9, so I walked. Next time I'll call. Ifigured it would be okay, since I've walked home before, and it was stilllight. Oops. I walked home at 5 before, not 7:30. I only got catcalled atfrom a car once, but I had a guy follow me for 4 blocks on his bike tryingto get me to come home with him. Seriously. I had passed him earlier, and he caught up to me and said, "Are you following me?" Then "Why don't you come home with me?"

What, on your bicycle?

He proceeded to ask me if I had a man. I lied and said I did. Then he started asking me all sorts of personal questions about me and my invisible boyfriend. Does he "service" me well? Is he going to "service" me tonight? What if he doesn't?

He left me after about 2 blocks to chat with a friend, but then he hurried to catch back up with me.

"Have you ever been with a black man? Or is your man a black man?"

"Have you ever thought about being with a black man?"

"Or do you just not like black men? It's okay, you can tell me."

I thought about telling him that it's not about not liking black men, it's about not liking men. But I value my sunburned dyke skin way too much to tell a stranger who's been stalking me for 4 blocks, on 10th street, at twilight, that I'm queer.

It was an adventure.

This is a mirror blog for my livejournal account, The Nonsense Notebook. Basically, you can find everything here that you would find there, but I won't bother posting my old entries here.

In short, I'm Ellie, a student at Hanover College, currently living with a friend and her boyfriend in Indianapolis because it's better than spending the summer with my parents in Louisville.
